Straight outta London, Academy Breakin’ Convention (ABC) is the UK’s first FREE full-time Level 3 Extended Diploma specific to Hip Hop Theatre for 16 – 19 year olds. ABC offers young people of all backgrounds an exciting and inclusive approach to education whilst centring the values of hip hop culture; peace, love, unity and having fun.
The course plays a vital role in filling a gap in professional pathway for emerging multidisciplinary artists and young, creative entrepreneurs who want to pursue work within the field of hip hop and the creative industries.
Academy Breakin’ convention is inspired by Breakin’ Convention an internationally renowned annual festival of hip hop theatre at Sadler’s Wells. Breakin’ Convention platforms hip hop talent through projects designed to decrease barriers into the creative industries for young people and professionals who have a passion for hip hop culture. ABC is one of the major initiatives at Sadler’s Wells East, located in East London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as part of East Bank, a new cultural hub for young creatives including the BBC, UAL’s London College of Fashion, University College London (UCL) and the V&A East.

- DJing
- Graffiti
- Music Production
- Hip Hop Social Dance
- Wellbeing and Self- development sessions
- Industry and careers progression sessions
- The creation and devising of theatrical work
- 12 units of UAL’s Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performance and Production Arts
Our aim is to nurture talent, instil growth mindsets and equip all learners with tools to build sustainable livelihoods in creative careers. We will encourage a variety of career progression routes from producing, directing, choreographing, script writing, marketing as well as performance-based practice and champion cross-disciplinary and collaborative practice, transferrable skills and innovative mergers, reflecting our more fluid industry boundaries.
The course is run in conjunction with Big Creative Training and provides young people of all backgrounds the opportunity to study performance and production with a focus on hip hop culture. Students will receive high quality training, studying the technical elements to prepare them for further studies, performance work and wider opportunities in the creative industry. Hip hop is a part of our creative future and ABC will nurture artists to become cultural contributors and future leaders.
